[Correspondence] WHO Guidelines to prevent surgical site infections

We have major concerns about the quality of evidence and the practicability of the first recommendation by Benedetta Allegranzi and colleagues1 about perioperative oxygenation, which is in the new WHO Guidelines about the prevention of surgical site infection.1 The authors state that “adult patients undergoing general anaesthesia with endotracheal intubation for surgical procedures should receive 80% fraction of inspired oxygen [FiO2] intraoperatively and, if feasible, in the immediate postoperative period for 2–6 h” to reduce the risk of surgical site infection.
