[Correspondence] WHO Guidelines to prevent surgical site infections–Authors' reply

Our recommendation1 of hyperoxygenation in the perioperative setting was based on 15 randomised trials identified within the timeframe agreed for the guidelines, which compared the administration of 80% fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) to 30–35% FiO2, with surgical site infection (SSI) as the primary outcome (see web appendix of the guidelines2). There was considerable between-study heterogeneity in the overall analysis,2 and exploration of possible sources was warranted. Meta-regression analyses found that the type of anaesthesia modified the effect of hyperoxygenation on SSI rates (pinteraction=0·05), whereas no interaction was found with type of surgery.
